Urban Angel: Clare Hooper

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

As a working mum of three young and very active kids it can be so easy to become consumed with just everything there is to do, from the routine of school life to all the responsibilities of home and work. It’s hard to find time for you, never mind anyone else! I want my life to be sown into others in my locality first and then beyond so when I was at Cherish this year and heard about the Urban Angels initiative I knew it was for me. I signed up to get involved.

As much as I love my local city and church, I also love my local neighbourhood, I am always thinking what more can I do? I began to offer to pick up other mum’s kids as well as mine to help them out. I invited some of the mums for tea – I always have a houseful of kids, at least seven for tea most days, and I always cook for one extra just in case!

Recently one of my neighbours (working full time and already a mother of a beautiful girl) was expecting a baby boy. I thought maybe this was a good chance to be an angel to her, so I contacted her friends and family and threw a surprise baby shower. She was blown away and her friends were too, it would have been easier for me to ignore it as I didn’t even know most of the 25 guests at the shower! She is now a person in my world that wants to express that same kindness to others.

I am so excited to be already planning for the Urban Angel week in October to gather some of these mums to raise awareness for other mums in Africa and raise some funds to help them along the way.

My story is that I didn’t think I could do much, trapped in the school run cycle but I have learnt it’s what’s in my hand that counts. So I signed my life up to just reach out to my local community in a way that comes naturally to me and it’s working. I am so glad that God can use me to bring hope, life and fun here in my part of the world.

So if you’re a busy mum like me, sign up and join in – it is definitely fun and easier than you think to get involved and you will be joining so many other women to really make a difference.

What’s in your hand, where can you start?
Looking forward to hearing your October tales…

Love
